Windows XP Service Pack 3

這幾天都有留意 Google Alerts 的消息，終於今天早上可以下載 Windows XP Service Pack 3 了。

在家裡下載 316MB 的檔案當然沒有甚麼問題，仍然似 copy 多過 download ，出去食個早餐回來就下載完畢。

我選擇在 Parallels Desktop 裡的 Windows XP Professional 先安裝這個 RTM 的 SP3 ... 果然不出我所料 ...

無論如何總是不能完成安裝，這個 wiadefui.dl_ 總是不能被 copy 到 Windows 裡，就算是自行 expand 也沒有辦法 ...

我諗 production environment 都要等一下先。

Another unreasonable move by Microsoft

Microsoft decided to continue stopping selling Windows XP from January 31, 2008. For more details, you can refer to this news article from BBC UK.

Well, for myself, Windows Vista is just another the-very-same-story as Windows Me in 1999, which made thousands of PC users hate Microsoft most. Again, I will try my best to keep the ThinkPad T42 with Windows XP Professional running as long as possible, or buying a new Macbook Pro in case it eventually comes into an end ... don't Microsoft think, know and understand, what a computer needs is actually very simple: userability!

For me and Minnelli, basically Windows Vista is not useable, insecure, trouble-making, extremely inconvenient to use and wasting money for meeting processor and memory requirements as it does not worth at all!

Will you spend much more money for an operating system (or a new PC with an operating system) which is insecure, troublemaking, inconvenient to use, seriously memory-and-processor-not-efficient performance to any types of users? Well, we did, but never again!

Therefore, the next question to myself: Why not a Mac?

Apple Mighty Mouse vs Apple Wireless Mouse?

多謝花女，以致我可以用學生價買了一只 Apple Mighty Mouse 。

在去年買 Apple Mac Mini 的時候經已想買 Mighty Mouse 了，只是當時買 wireless keyboard 和 mouse 有特價，之後才後悔。

今次花了一點時間安裝，嗯 ..... 感覺良好。隨即把原有的 Wireless Mouse disable 並嘗試在 IBM T42 with Windows XP 中安裝 ... 成功了！再加裝 Apple Mouse Utility 便可以按 [Ctrl]+Click 等如 right-click 了，不是跟 Mac OS X 一樣嗎？

在我現時缺少了一只 mouse 出街而言，這一只 Apple Wireless Mouse 實在出現得太好、太合時了！當然，這也得靠 Mighty Mouse 的出現才可以成事吧！

感覺上今天一個晚上多了兩件玩具 ...

Ubuntu 6.06 LTS vs Windows XP SP2

話說 4 月份那次中國福音事工分享會，我的手提電腦 IBM ThinkPad T42 的 external monitor 接頭壞掉，早兩天我把它送往 Lenovo ServiCenter 維修。他們給我換了底板，但昨天早上它在使用中途突然自行強行關機，所以昨天我再把它送回 Lenovo ServiCenter 維修。直至今天他們仍然找不到原因，所以又換了一次底板。

沒有手提電腦的這兩天，我使用公司的一台舊電腦 IBM ThinkPad T40 安裝了 Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTS ，昨天亦有在這裡貼出我的用後感。雖然我仍然沒有機會研究如何在 Ubuntu 上使用 SCIM ，沒有機會輸入中文字，但我相信我身邊的朋友自家用的電腦全面轉用 Linux 並不是不可能的。


到了今天，手提電腦維修完畢，再次登入 Windows XP 的感覺有點奇怪。雖然這台 T42 比起 T40 強勁很多，但使用 Windows XP 的確比起使用 Ubuntu Linux 為慢，其中使用 WiFi 在 Ubuntu Linux 的簡易程度有如在 Mac OS X 上一樣！如果 Ubuntu Linux 繼續在中文支援和中文字型上有更多突破的話，不久將來香港人不用使用翻版 Windows 和翻版 Office 啦！
