Installing Active Directory and Exchange Server 2003 on Windows Server 2003

On Windows Server 2003, before the installation begins:
  1. Install and configure Chinese support, keep US English as the default locale. Restart server in case change is required.
  2. Install Microsoft DNS from Add/Remove Windows Components from Add/Remove Programs, configure allowing dynamic update with Microsoft DHCP.
  3. Install IIS, web, SMTP and NNTP service (NOT the Email Service).
  4. Install and configure Certificate Service if you would like to enable HTTPS and RPC over HTTP.
  5. (Optional) Install Microsoft WINS for better NetBIOS name and IP address resolutions.
  6. (Optional, highly recommended) Install Microsoft DHCP for better updates between Microsoft DNS and IP address table.
  7. Download and install available updates, security updates and additional Windows Components from Microsoft Update, including Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 .
  8. Restart the server.
Installing Active Directory:
  1. %SYSTEMROOT% drive must be in NTFS format.
  2. Execute DCPROMO from command line or Run dialogue.
  3. Follow on screen instructions, make sure you will note all passwords created in this process.
  4. Reboot the server as required.
Installing Exchange Server 2003:
  1. Insert Exchange Server 2003 installation disc into optical drive.
  2. Logon with domain administrator.
  3. Execute the command X:\I386\setup.exe /forestprep and follow instructions on screen.
  4. Execute the command X:\I386\setup.exe /domainprep and follow instructions on screen.
  5. Execute the command X:\I386\setup.exe and follow instructions on screen.
  6. If your ISP requires email relay through its SMTP server, create a SMTP connector.
  7. Configure the domain name for Exchange group.
Administration and Management:
  1. Create backup session for Information Store from NT Backup. You may run this backup manually or by schedule. This will help in writing log files onto the Information Store.
  2. Configure OWA in Form or CHEP Challenge.
  3. Configure RPC Over HTTP in case you would like to allow full collaboration service access from external network on Outlook 2003.
  4. Install and configure virus-scanning software for Exchange Server 2003.
  5. Configure firewall/router allowing port 25 (SMTP), 80 (HTTP), 110 (POP3) redirecting to the server. Additonal ports are required for RPC over HTTP configurations.
That's it.
